Members of the UNOG Staff Coordination Council have the possibility to take part in training courses carried out by the General Federation of Trade Unions (GFTU) in the UK. These training courses cover important topics, such as “negotiation & influencing skills” or “leadership skills”, specifically approaching them from a trade union perspective. These mainly two-day courses provide a basis for the discussed subject, reinforced through role plays and case studies. The participants are expected to apply and improve the acquired skills in practice.

The feedback of our staff representatives has been positive through and through. With the United Kingdom being the stronghold of trade union work, it is not surprising that the trainers are highly skilled and knowledgeable. Furthermore, the exchange with other participants, some of whom work as full time staff representatives, proves to be an interesting and enriching asset to these training courses.

The GFTU provides trainings throughout the year, which are suitable for all staff union representatives – from newcomers to experienced union leaders. They also cover sensitive subjects such as LGBT equality, mental health issues or disability awareness.

Training is very important for the staff council. With a team of staff representatives that is up to date on special issues and who conscientiously develops their skills, we can act as strong and confident support for our staff to defend their rights.
